Protecting the privacy of consumers can be good for online businesses


With the growing security threats online, consumers are more careful about how and with whom, they share their data. E-mail scams, phishing and pharming threats, along with other breaches of data security, have begun to raise a family of prudent online consumers who are beginning to appreciate the benefits of protecting their personal information.

The result of this is that online businesses should think twice before asking for personal data, or run the risk of losing custom or threatened with legal action. Online sales depend on the transfer of personal data and the number of online retailers has increased in recent years. Consumers have more choice about where to shop and who they want to share their inside information. Retailers and other online companies will increasingly need to develop privacy and security practices that are not only transparent to the consumer, but which are easily digestible, simple in language and legally robust.

Companies that do not experience this adverse effect on their sales or other important parameters consumption ratio. Paradoxically, with the continuous increase in online sales, online sales already reporting can be questioned and even more harmed by poor online security measures. Who would want to make offline purchases from a retailer where you will experience on-line at that same dealer was poor?

But who regulates this process of accountability and transparency for online safety for consumers? It seems as if companies are not easily able to do it yourself. The involvement of the government continued to be the driving force, including data protection legislation, and seems to be the way forward, at least in the short term.

But the companies could do well by targeting the same security concerns that consumers have. If consumers are unanswered questions about the use and misuse of their data, or any other part of the online interaction with a company, then why not allow the company to proactively addressing and eliminating these fears and concerns ? ......
